Sophia’s House of Pancakes Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

  • Zach F.

You get huge portions compared to other breakfast establishments and comparable prices. Their menu lists the number of eggs in each item but they use double yolk eggs so you are actually getting 4 eggs when you order 2. Every time I've gone there the staff is friendly and the food delicious. My favorite is the ham and cheese omelette. For $8.25 you get a five egg omelette (actually 10 eggs) filled with a good amount of ham and cheese, hash browns, and toast or pancakes. I would highly recommend Sophia's but make sure you come hungry.

Sophia's House of Pancakes is a fun, yes fun made that way by our waitress, and great place for breakfast. We were passing through looking for a place to eat breakfast and didn't want to hit the chains. I was just going to order a couple of eggs and some toast and then saw a plate of the stuffed french toast delivered to a table next to us. After seeing that I decided I would give that a try. OMG, it was the best french toast I have ever had. Their omelets are made with 5 eggs and can be enough for two people! The only negative I have of Sophia's is that there are no pictures of the food on the menu so it's hard to see what their specialties are. I guess if you go there enough times you'll know what to order.

Food is so-so. If they would turn down or turn off Fox Noise, I could tolerate the place better. I don't enjoy political views shoved down my throat while I eat. Especially if I am paying for the meal.

Good food and Michele was an excellent waitress, very close to the highway as I travel for business. I will definitely be going back and hope Michele waits on me again! Thanks for a great breakfast experience.

So two times in 30 days and service is terrible. Cannot get a waitress after you are seated to even offer you coffee. Waited 10 min in the booth and nothing. Needless to say we did not stay. Time before we waited it out and the service was terrible thru out. All the way to when we paid the bill.

By golly, the folks here are friendly. And when I say "here," I mean outside of the immediate Chicagoland area. People strike up conversation with strangers! It's incredible. We experienced this warm atmosphere, for sure, here at Sophia's. I chose my meal, an avocado and Monterey Jack cheese omelette after viewing a yummy-looking photo posted by another user. Good choice! The omelette was packed with avocados, and the hash browns served alongside were top notch. Our waitress, Karen was very attentive and friendly. The only real knocks on this place are time related. On a Saturday morning, it took about twice as long to be seated as had been estimated. This was ultra apparent, since I'm used to restaurants overestimating the wait time. Once we were seated and had placed our order, our food took its time in leisurely making its way to us. Not the hustle and bustle we are used to at home, but worth the wait.

We have come here many times...I prefer to support a local business rather than a chain...even though the food is subpar at best. The treatment I received today was/is unfortunate and I will not be returning again. When being sat, the gentleman decided to seat us right next to the service area....Normally I don't have a problem with this but it was extremely noisy....so I asked to be seated at a different table (there were open tables throughout the entire restaurant)....I was given a look and was told the table on the other side of the divider would be our table....in the back of the restaurant next to he bathrooms. We left....to never return again.

Food was good but it was terrible service it took the waitress forever to get our drinks.. and food took forever to come out. Wasn't pleased at all people that sat down after us got food before us. Management wasn't pleasant at all either. Visit at your own risk!

Ended up here again this morning. I'm increasing my review to 4 stars. My avacado omelette was just that good. They load it up with avacado, which is very impressive. The avacado is layered on top and inside. Too notch and delicious. Service was excellent. Place isn't much to look at though, they serve store bought bakery items. If you want a good omelette you'll be happy enough. Nothing else is that great including the lack luster pancakes and waffles.

Went there with family that live in the area and was very disappointed. They seated us by the Kitchen which was our first problem. They keep the bin for the dirty dishes right outside the Kitchen doors which was right next to the table they sat us at. All we could hear was all the noise from the kitchen and the continous slamming of the dishes being thrown into the bin by the waitresses. We asked to be moved because poor grandpa has hearing aids and the noise was really blasting him, and the rest of us couldn't even hold a conversation with all the noise. The waitress who was very nice and sweet went to tell the hostess that she was moving us, but you could see the hostess giving her a hard time for it. Needless to say we finally got moved. Once we ordered, unfortunately it took about 45 mins for our food to come out. The food not very tasting and just average at best. Definetly nothing to brag about. We won't be going back.

Hubby & I went here based on the great yelp reviews. Okay, I'm probably jaded, being from Chicago and having so many great restaurants at our fingertips, but this breakfast food was just okay to me. I ordered the Avacado & cheese omelette. It had the equivalent of half and Avacado (perfect amount) and about 1 tablespoon of cheese. There was no cheese in the omlete, just a few little bit on top. Personally I like lots of cheese on my omlete.. Especially when cheese is called out in the name. Hubby got the strawberry crepes. Those were great. Lots of fresh strawberries. It was reasonably priced too. We did feel a little rushed by our waitress, too. We were not dilly-dallying either. Oh! One tip... Avoid the baked goods. They have these showcased at the front in their plastic packaging from Aldi! Which is right next door! Lol

I would see the sign traveling and being a breakfast and brunch person I had to try commuting from Chicago to South Bend. I ordered the sausage and cheese omelet. The portion was huge and I am picky about my hash browns and they were crispy enough. The pancakes were delicious as well. The manager and owner were very friendly to us as well. I definitely will be back. My sister had the apple cinnamon french toast and it was delicious! Also the orange juice was so fresh probably the freshest in the 30 mile radius.

True enough, the portions are generous, and the staff is nice enough, but if you plan to go there and only get a bakery item, save yourself some money and grab it at Walmart. Seriously, the stuff they are selling is straight from the walmart bakery, only EXTREMELY marked up. So disappointed to see that in the display as if they are proud of it!

Save yourself the trouble and the time, and go somewhere else! My boyfriend and I waited a half hour to be seated and another 50 minutes after we ordered to get our food. Food was not worth the wait, and the manager did not seem to care when we expressed our disappointment. P.S. The sausage gravy is "dangerous."

Not pleased at all. Food was barely hot, eggs were overcooked, served pork sausage as turkey. Very disappointed!!!

Our server was very rude. When he finally showed up after 10 minutes of sitting there he asked how many want coffee. One in are party did. There were two cups on the table for four people. He got mad and said if there's only one person having coffee then why wasn't the other cup turned upside down. Then when he finally took our orders the rudeness continued. Food took forever to get out and wasn't very good. Then as I was leaving I noticed in there dessert case that they had desserts in there that wal mart sells. They were still in the wal mart containers. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

I really use to like eating here for breakfast. But when I saw the busser taking the butter off a table that had used it and put the used cups of butter scooped out and into a bigger holder for the butter. It left me pondering why don't they throw out the butter? It has been used or not used but it was placed on the table. The owner must have them safe it to use again :( Just an observation they don't throw it in the bus tub to get thrown out. So I don't want any communicable diseases, so I won't be back.

The pancakes were really tough! The French fries looked done, in fact they looked great, but they were ice cold, and tough. The service was friendly but very slow. Won't be returning.

Skip IHOP and Denny's and go to Sophia's! On a Sunday am we were wanting a good breakfast before we got on the road. We read about Sophia's and even though there were a few mixed reviews, my husband wanted to give the local place a go, I agreed as long as when we pulled up I saw enough cars to know it was popular. The parking lot wasn't packed, but enough to satisfy me. We were seated quickly and greeted by our server equally as fast. The menu has lots of choices! Be prepared to take your time and change your mind a few times. I asked our server how peppery the gravy was (for biscuits and gravy), and although she said she had never had it, she offered to get me a taste! Who does that? That's great service! The 2 full sized biscuits and gravy were very good. It came with 3 eggs cooked the way you want over a small skillet of perfectly crispy hash browns. All they for $6.95! My husbands 5 egg omelet was very tasty as well. It came with melted cheese on the top, hash browns and his choice of breads. He had sourdough toast, which he said was authentic. His was $8.95. Neither one of us could finish the food. They offered a to go box, but we declined because we were traveling. They also offered to go drinks for both of us. Again, skip the chain restaurants and go to Sophia's! We are glad we did.

What a solid breakfast for the price and you can choose between toast, pancakes or French toast with your egg order. Wow!! Had a ham & cheese omelette filled with smokey ham. What a great way to start the day. I'd definitely come back.

There was a bit of a wait for a table and an even longer one for the food. Gospel recordings in the bathroom were a little creepy. I ordered the avocado omelette with pancakes and my date got the hobo skillet with toast. Food was very average. Omelette was fluffy, hashbrowns were slimy and pancakes were dense. Seems like one of the better places to stop though in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't waste my money here. It has been a couple of years since we ate here due to crappy food and even crappy service; in the interim, NOTHING HAS CHANGED. NOTHING. Service just as crappy; listened to the host explain to the other host who was next, watched him seat another party instead. Waitress called my bearded husband "lady". Waitress had a difficult time taking our breakfast ordered and then told us less than five minutes later that "your food is coming out any time now". No, it did not. It was more like 20 minutes later. It would have been better had she said nothing at all. She then checked on our table 3 or 4 times WITHOUT A COFFEE POT IN HAND. At a breakfast joint. I'm no super genius, but really? Husband ordered crispy bacon; clearly the kitchen staff does not understand what that means. Pancakes, which they hang their hat on, came out cold. I guess I just expect better customer service. Most people go out to eat for the customer service. Well, you're simply not going to get it here. I highly recommend spending your money elsewhere.

Absolutely delicious spinach and feta cheese omelette with dry rye toast and very fresh fruit served politely in a timely manner.

We love this place!! One of the best places to go to get a omelet. They are big and fluffy just as they should be. Highly recommended.

I'm not a breakfast connoisseur, but I know average when I see it (or taste it?). Sophia's is exactly that: Average. I ended up getting a corned beef hash skillet with eggs over-medium and pancakes. Corned beef hash? Delicious. Pancakes? Pretty good. The rest? Meh. The skillet was supposed to be over "home fries" but it was really on top of sliced potatoes, the eggs were over-easy and slimy (blech, I hate slimy eggs), and the coffee is weak and forgettable (I AM picky about my coffee though). My husband got some regular egg breakfast with bacon and french toast and seemed to like everything but the bacon (too thin and under cooked). Service was excellent (considering the other reviews, I'd say we got lucky here) but the food is nothing special. Bottom line: Go to Bob Evans' (Evan's?) down the street and get some real home fries. And some biscuits and gravy. You'll thank me.

Breakfast Served in a Skillet I found this place through Yelp and it did not disappoint. Portions are HUGE, and the omelets are made with 5 eggs, actually a one egg breakfast comes with 2 eggs, and a 2 egg breakfast comes with 4 eggs, not sure how the owner does the math, but you get a great breakfast for a fair price. I loved that most of the egg dishes comes in a skillet, a pretty cool concept. I had a hashbrown dish with a few eggs on top and it was really good...the breakfast meats were solid and the juice was good. You will have a pretty good breakfast here!

  • Mary N.

Four of us had breakfast here, two omelettes (Spinach& Feta, and a Western) and two scrambles. The portions were plentiful, food was all very good (spinach in the omelette was fresh) and one of the few places that actually offers a choice of fresh fruit as a side instead of hash browns. I ordered the fresh fruit side and it was three slices of melon (watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe) and a piece of fresh orange. Nice refreshing change. Did try the hash browns because they looked delicious, and they were.

Interminable wait for breakfast and host says it won't be long. Portions huge but kitchen easily overwhelmed.

Hearty MidWest Breakfast with a side of Family..... Everything about Sophia's House of Pancakes screams Mid-West. The comfortably dated decor, friendly waitresses, and large portions remind you that people in the MidWest are nice, and sometimes, a little jollier than their coastal counterparts. I stopped in with a large, loud group of friends on the way up to New Buffalo for a day of beach fun. Is it a midwest thing to stuff your face with pancakes and bacon before running around in a bathing suit? If it isn't, it is now. I ordered a stack of buttermilk pancakes with scrambled eggs, bacon, and an orange juice. The pancakes were fluffy and cakey, and soaked up the syrup like a lovely breakfast sponge. The eggs and bacon were on point as well. For a true taste of the midwest, Sophia's hits the taste buds.

I really enjoyed Sophia's - it was like an up-class IHOP (which just happened to be right across the street). They have the usually breakfast fare - pancakes, omelets, crepes, etc.- but I was really impressed by the omelet options. I was torn between avocado and cheese or artichokes and cheese, but I went with the artichoke.. and it was a great choice. My meal also came with delicious hashbrowns and 2 pancakes. The hashbrowns as I said were delicious, but the pancakes were the only thing I was a little 'meh' about. They were a little dense and dry for me, but still edible. Add all this to tasty coffee, a sweet waitress, and a good price, and I was a happy camper!

  • Amanda F.

My most favorite breakfast joint in the area. The omelets are huge and fluffy and full of whatever you like! They definitely don't skimp on ingredients here! Whatever I order, it comes out just as I ask (and I can be picky) and fresh!

Great food. Love their pancakes. The first time we went there the service was great. We went back a couple days later and the service suxed. Food was great though.

This place is way overpriced for what you get. $6 bucks for pancakes is the going rate if they are standard size. Not the one's I got. And they came out in under 2 minutes, but they were barely warm. How do you do that? The 80's seafoam green and dusty rose are quite annoying. But not as much as being seated with a full view of the portrait of some kid in a tiara that is so old and faded she must be out of college by now. The ant walking across my table was a nice touch. I should have looked at the bill to see if the floor show was extra.

As my husband said, "Best pancakes he ever had!" They have great assortment of breakfast items on their menu, not to mention that the portions are plenty and the prices are great. The staff is also VERY friendly and helpful. We will definitely make this a part of our stop on all our travels through Michigan City.

Try the avocado omelet!! Other then that this place might as well be a Bob Evans.

This is just another breakfast place. The omelettes was good but the pancakes were just average. I was happy with the fruit juice. Also, the service was just average, although I need to make a note of the hostess who was really warm and amazing.

This place has very good food, reasonably priced, and attentive, friendly staff. I am a self proclaimed "picky person" and I usually either love/hate! A couple other reviews were surprising, and based on the wording....seems like some people are waaay pickier than me...I mean really, insulting the decor?!

Fabulous! Clean, friendly people. Kids loved the french toast, pancakes and sausage / cheese omelets and fresh fruit. Mom and Dad enjoyed the Denver skillet and the spinach/feta omelet.

It is a typical sit down breakfast/americana. I will say that the staff is a bit to chatty and border on intrusive.

This is the best place in Michigan City for a good breakfast. My family and I eat here often and love it. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get and you may want to share unless you're really really hungry. They have a delicious apple pancake but you may want to order this as soon as you are seated because it does take some time to cook but well worth it. Even the traditional pancakes are better then most other restaurants. The owner is also really nice. He's always giving us free soup and he gave my parents a $10 gift card the week of Christmas. The only thing that bothers me a little is some of the wait staff. A few of the servers have a bit too much attitude. This is a great place to take the family for breakfast or lunch but remember they are only opened till 3pm.

The food alone would rate five stars... the service, not so much. That said, I usually won't go back to a place where I have experienced bad customer service. The food is good enough here that I'm willing to make an exception. That says a lot. The breakfast menu is so extensive that it is really difficult to decide on just one thing -- and everything is fantastic! If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with the Sophia's Crepes which are very similar to cheese blintzes, but even better. All of the omelettes are huge, made with 5 eggs, and the pancakes are plate-sized. They have lots of unique types of pancakes, crepes, blintzes, omelettes, and skillets to make your breakfast experience memorable. Oh, and the fresh-squeezed orange juice is not to be missed! It is a bit sweeter than most and my daughter thinks the "secret" ingredient is banana -- whatever's in it, it's totally delicious! Now for the bad news. Most of the servers seem to be on their first or last serving job. When it gets busy, the host staff is very disorganized and the servers tend to ignore you for an unacceptable amount of time when you are first seated. On a recent busy Sunday, my daughter and I visited and were added to the list. After 10 minutes or so my name was called and the hostess asked us to follow the gentleman who was seating people. As it turns out, he seated the wrong people and we had to wait longer. Apparently there were people just standing by the hostess stand and when our name was called, he assumed they were the ones to be seated (they had just walked in to the restaurant and effectively jumped the line in front of all the people who were waiting). He turned around and gave us a blank stare and I told him that the hostess had told us to follow him. He apologized, said he made an error, and we would have to wait for the next available table. OK, mistakes happen. We had to wait an additional five minutes or so, and once we were seated, we had to wait another five minutes or so for the server to acknowledge our presence and offer drinks. The service was extremely slow throughout our meal. It turned out that we were there for almost two hours total and my daughter had to go to work. As I was paying at the register, the manager (I assume) asked if everything was satisfactory. Since he asked, I relayed our experience. As he handed me my change, he said, and I quote, "I'm sorry you're having a bad day." Excuse me? Wow. Why ask if you really don't care? And why would you ever act like it's the customer's fault when they receive bad service? I didn't complain throughout the meal, I tipped more than what was deserved, I was friendly to the server. I was polite and tactful when relating my experience. Normally that would be my last visit. But the food is just too good to stay away. The bottom line -- when you go, allow plenty of time.

I visited at about 2pm on a Friday. They weren't busy but there were several tables sat. Our server, Pam, was AWESOME!!!! She was the best server I have had in a LONG WHILE, so I shall say her name a couple more times, Pam, Pam, Pam!!! I hope the next time I go out to eat I get another Pam. I read the previous reviews and they didn't like the service. Ask for Pam. I got the Ruben and my mother got the Eggs Benedict. Hers was good and comparative to just good Eggs Benedict. So was my Ruben. But, the Ruben came with choice of soup (bowl), fries, a very small cup of cole slaw and the sandwich. Add some S&P to the slaw and it's fine. Sandwich, good, flip it so it doesn't get soggy on the bottom, ask for the hash browns extra crispy if you like some crunch to them. The soup choices were beef veggie and cream of spinach. I do not like spinach so I opted for the beef veggie. Pam said she didn't like spinach either but liked the soup. She brought the big bowl (didn't expect it to be a bowl) of veggie beef soup and also a taste size of the spinach soup. Both soups were very good. Neither one of them tasted like they came out of a bag from corporate office. Great soups! The people were also really nice. I will return if I'm in the area and the place is still open. They close at 3PM.

I'll admit, if I passed by Sophia's without reading the reviews, we probably wouldn't have stopped in. The joint looks like an old IHOP, except that there is actually an IHOP directly across the street. But we did read the reviews, and had driven for 20 minutes to get here, and I was starving. Immediately upon opening the menu, I was wowed, and knew I wouldn't be able to decide between the omelettes, frittatas, scrambled egg creations, or breakfast wraps. Luckily my husband likes to do splitskies, so I got to try 2. First of all, the omelettes were made with 5 eggs. Personally, that was way too many for me, so I opted to go with an egg white which made it the perfect size. Also, instead of a side of toast, you could opt for a slice of FRENCH TOAST!!!! At no extra charge. Say whaaaa?! Sold. Being a vegetarian, I usually have to modify existing things on the menu, as I'm not typically a fan of the "green pepper, mushroom, onion" vegetable omelette that always is on every menu. Nope, not here. I had a plethora of options. I went with the artichoke, mozz, and parmesan and it was el perfecto! The skillet I tried was great too - good hashbrowns. And they use Louisiana hot sauce, my personal fav. They also have a Michigan apple and cheddar cheese omelet, I'm getting that next time. Our waitress was good. Kept coffee refills coming right when we needed them, and was on top of everything. She even mentioned where the farmers market was, and suggested we hit it up when we were done.

This place is great. Whenever I visit family in Indiana, we have to go there. The smell of fresh squeezed orange juice hits you the second you hit the door. The service is great, the food is great, and they really make you feel welcome
